BlazBlue -Calamity Trigger- game review

Among lots and lots of 3D games, there are also those epic 2D games that have to be played, just like BlazBlue -Calamity Trigger-. Why is it so great? Well, in my opinion, it’s one of the best 2D fighting games, and also my favourite game of this genre.

The character designs are very detailed and the storyline is really interesting. Now, something about the gameplay. The game consists in duels between 2 characters, and each round is called a ”rebel”. To win, you have to reduce the opponent’s health to zero, or to have more health when the time runs out. Each character has his own attacks, and special techniques, called ”drive attacks”. You can perform combos, by repeatedly hitting your opponent, without them hitting back. Another thing that you need to know when you play, is that you have a ”heat gauge”, that is filled when you deal or receive damage. You need to have 50% of the heat gauge filled to use ”distortion drive”, a special attack that deals great damage to the opponent. There is also the ”astral heat” attack, that requires a full heat gauge, and the opponent to have less than 20% health.

BlazBlue -Calamity Trigger- is the first game in the BlazBlue series, its sequel being BlazBlue Continuum Shift. Well, I guess I should say something about the storyline now~ Before the events in Calamity Trigger, humans almost disappeared because of a creature called the ”Black Beast”, but 6 heroes who wielded magic prevented that from happening, and created ”Ars Magus”. The event was known as ”The First War of Magic”. After that, Novus Orbis Librarium (NOL) was created and ruled the world, using Ars Magus. Because of socioeconomic affairs, the people from Ikaruga rebelled against the NOL, resulting The Second War of Magic, also known as The Ikaruga Civil War. The Librarium won the war, and made harsher rules, punishing the anyone who rebels against it with death. One day, a branch of the NOL is destroyed by Ragna the Bloodedge, also known as the ”Grim Reaper”, who has a powerful Ars Magus called the ”Azure Grimoire”. The Librarium puts a huge bounty on him. So this is how the story starts, with lots of people who want to capture Ragna for the bounty, or for the Azure Grimoire.

The characters in BlazBlue have unique personalities and designs, as well as interesting pasts.

Ragna the Bloodedge – is the main character of the series, as well as Jin and Saya’s older brother. He has a huge bounty on his head because he wants to destroy the NOL. Because Saya was ill, he spent a lot of time taking care of her, and Jin became jealous. Ragna is rude with anyone and hates the Librarium. He gets angry pretty fast and he’s stubborn, but he cares for some people and loves his little brother. He has white hair, his left eye is green, and his right eye is red. Ragna wields the Azure Grimoire.

Jin Kisaragi – is a major and 4th Thaumaturgist Squadron Commander of the NOL, and he was adopted into the Kisaragi family. He is Ragna and Saya’s brother.

Jin is cold, aloof and indifferent, and he doesn’t care of his status as a major. However, he loves his brother, in his childhood being jealous of his sister. When he’s around Ragna, he loses his calm and his voice slightly changes, and acts like a kid. He has blond hair and green eyes. Jin wields the Nox Nyctores called ”Yukianesa”.He uses ice-based attacks. Oh, and he’s my favourite character<3

Noel Vermillion – is a lieutenant at the Novus Orbis Librarium, and she was assigned to bring Jin Kisaragi back to his post. She is passionate and motivated at anything her work, and she’s shy and clumsy. Noel is always overthinking things. She has blond hair and green eyes, and she wields the Nox Nyctores named ”Bolverk”.

Rachel Alucard – is the head of the Alucard Family, and she’s a vampire. She is sarcastic and arrogant, especially with people she considers lower than her. When she’s fighting, she is helped by 2 cute um…I don’t know what they are, called Nago and Gii. Her butler is name Valkenhayn. Rachel has blond hair and red eyes.

Taokaka – is a catgirl from the Kaka clan, and she is always cheerful. She loves food and thinks that whoever gives her food is a good person. She wears a hood, and her face can’t be seen, she has blond hair and light-brown skin.

Litchi Faye-Ling – is a doctor from Orient Town, who often helps the Kaka clan, teaching the children. She is a kind  and intelligent person. Litchi has black hair and pink eyes.

Arakune – is a..um…uh…I don’t know how to describe him, he’s a black thing with a white mask. He was once a human, who did some kind of research and ended up like that.

Iron Tager – works for Sector Seven, and he was once saved by Kokonoe, being very loyal to her. He is calm and serious. His hair is black and white, and his skin is red.

Carl Clover – is a vigilante, and a former student of the Military Academy, where he attended along with Jin and Noel before dropping out of the academy. He is accompanied by a doll called ”Nirvana”, saying that she’s her sister, Ada. He has blond hair and blue eyes.

Bang Shishigami – is a ninja from Ikaruga. He lost his master in the Ikaruga Civil War, and he hates the NOL and Jin Kisaragi for that. He hates evil and he likes to give himself titles like ”the hero of love and justice”(or something like that). Bang has brown hair and brown eyes, and he has an ”X” shaped scar on his face.

The other 2 playable characters are Nu-13 and Hakumen, but I can’t say anything about them because there will be spoilers.

The game is available for PSP, PS3, Xbox 360, arcade and PC.

I hope you liked the review~

  1. Many people are underestimating 2D games, but lets remember the first Mario games we’re 2D and nobody was crying. It were actually great games. 3D may have an edge, but 2D is still fun to play sometimes 😛 .
